Magritte’s Mysterious Memory by Alvin Burstein, PhD (Psychoanalytic Explorations)

June 5, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

This virtual event is free to attend and pre-registration is required by emailing your name and degree to nobpcenter@gmail.com.

The Life and Influence of the surrealist painter, Rene Magritte will be reviewed, with special emphasis on the influence of his mother’s suicide on his work. Familial suicide can have profound impact on development and creative potential that is difficult to articulate consciously and that therefore often is dealt with incompletely in treatment.

By focusing on familial (maternal) suicide, participants will increase awareness of its unconscious effects and how to deal with them.

Participants will become more competent in treating patients with familial suicide in their background

This activity will address competency in assessing and intervening with impacts of familial suicide on development and creativity, and evaluating the effectiveness of the approach

Learning Objectives:

• Describe and elaborate the influence of trauma on artistic work.
• Describe the multiple functions of memory for life events.
